District kicks off superintendent search

The Springfield School Board kicked off the search for the next superintendent of Springfield Public Schools by selecting the executive search firm of McPherson & Jacobson, LLC to begin the national recruitment process to find just the right fit.

"We are looking for an individual who will build upon the recent successes in student growth and graduation rates. Someone who will leverage the targeted reinvestments in curriculum and resources the board has made in recent budget years," said Board Chair Zach Bessett.

The search will begin with a special board work session on November 1 to draft a position description. Families, staff and community members will have multiple opportunities to weigh in on the process, via focus groups and an online survey.

"Springfield is a supportive and engaged community, and while the board will ultimately make the selection, we want our candidates to know the support they have at their disposal," said Bessett, noting his appreciation for the search firm’s approach to community involvement.

The Board’s goal is to have a new superintendent in place for the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. In the meantime, former Curriculum Director Bruce Smolnisky will continue in the role of Interim Superintendent.
