Board Approves Contractor for THS Softball Facility

Springfield Public Schools is excited to announce that it will soon begin construction of a new softball practice facility at Thurston High School.

This announcement comes after the Springfield School Board, at its regular board meeting Monday, officially approved the construction project, allowing it to move forward. Construction on the project, which will be completed by Bridgeway Construction of Lowell, is set to begin immediately and will likely be completed mid-year 2021.

The new softball facility will include a large practice area, team locker room, coaches’ office, concession area and supporting restrooms. The main structure - a light wood-framed building with a metal roof - will be about 4,900 square feet.

"We are very grateful and excited for the new softball building," said Thurston High School Athletic Director Justin Starck. "The opportunities it will create for children in our community are vast and will be felt for years to come. Our student-athletes and staff will have a facility they can truly be proud of. Thank you so much, SPS!"

Cory Tuntland of the Thurston High School Softball Boosters expressed via public comment to the School Board that the project will address space issues faced by students and staff as well as allow for more consistent practice times.

“This project may seem like a sizable investment, but it’s an investment in the future success of generations of student-athletes to come,” he said.

Kelly Stewart also shared with the School Board, “I am very grateful for the building that the girls will have for many years, and I’m just so happy that it’s another piece of the puzzle (to build) an amazing program.”
