Board appoints interim superintendent
This evening the Springfield School Board officially accepted the resignation of Dr. Sue Rieke-Smith effective June 30, 2018. During the meeting the board moved forward with the appointment of Bruce Smolnisky as the interim superintendent for the 2018-19 school year. The appointment of Mr. Smolnisky will allow the board the time to complete a comprehensive search and hiring process for the next permanent superintendent. This appointment will allow all departments to continue moving the district work forward without the need for additional backfill.
Bruce Smolnisky, a well respected and long-time Springfield School District employee, most recently filled the role of the district’s interim director of human resources. Smolnisky has served the Springfield community in a number of positions across our system, including 17 years in district leadership. Prior to joining the district leadership team, Smolnisky was a long-time principal and a special education teacher.
The school board overwhelmingly applauded Smolnisky’s commitment to the district and the Springfield community and thanked him for his willingness to ensure that the momentum built under Dr. Rieke-Smith’s tenure continues. With his extensive knowledge of the district, its systems and many partners, Smolnisky is prepared to support the work throughout this transitional year.
“Springfield Public Schools has made great strides in recent years, including significant reinvestments in curriculum, and an increase in our graduation rate,” said Smolnisky. “I am proud to continue to serve and support the work moving forward and assist with the selection process for the next leader that will take our district into the future.”
Following Smolnisky’s appointment the board moved forward to officially declare the position vacant to allow them to begin discussions around defining a search process for the next superintendent. A timeline and process will be outlined at future board meetings.
