Springfield School Board now accepting applications for open seat

The Springfield School Board is officially accepting applications for its Position 5 open seat.

At its meeting Monday evening, the board announced it would be accepting applications beginning this week through Sept. 18.

Interviews for the position are scheduled to be held at a board work session Sept. 23, and the board’s newest member may potentially be appointed at a board meeting the same evening.

Position 5 was vacated by Karen Hunter who learned shortly after the May 21 Lane County special election that she and her family would be moving out of state.

Hunter submitted her resignation soon after the election and the board opted to wait for newly elected board members to be sworn in before accepting applications for the open seat. The Position 5 seat expires June 30, 2021.

The current board includes recently elected members Naomi Raven, Position 4, who was appointed to the position in October of 2018; new member Todd Mann who was elected to Position 1 in the May special election to take over for incumbent Laurie Adams; Board Chair Zach Bessett and Emilio Hernandez who were both elected in May 2017. Their terms expire June 30, 2021.

Eligible applicants must be registered to vote and live within the boundaries of Springfield Public Schools. Springfield district employees cannot be appointed to the position.
