Walk + Roll to school this month!

Students at Agnes Stewart Middle School on Monday kicked off their week with some exercise, sunshine and smoothies as a part of the Breakfast at the Bike Racks event.

The early morning gathering, which took place near some bicycle racks just before school, was part of the Walk + Roll Challenge — a month-long effort that takes place during the month of May that aims to encourage children and families to walk, bike and roll to and from school and throughout their neighborhoods.

Students on Monday took turns pedaling on a stationary bike that powered a blender full of frozen berries, yogurt and orange juice to make smoothies.

The Eugene-Springfield Safe Routes to School organizes the event each year, with help from the Street Trust, Oregon Department of Transportation, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and other partners and sponsors.

Laughton Elliot-DeAngelis, the Springfield district Safe Routes to School Coordinator said that the month-long event reaches thousands of students and families per year.

“The goal is to get kids excited about bicycling, walking and spending time outside as summer gets closer,” Elliot-DeAngelis said. “It also encourages less single-driver trips.”

Over the last month or so, Safe Routes installed about $25,000 worth of new bicycle racks throughout the district, allowing for about 360 new bicycle parking spaces. Another $5,000 was allotted toward improving the concrete where bicycles are parked at Briggs.

Walk + Roll to school coincides with National Bike Month, which has been celebrated across the nation since 1956 takes place during the month of May.

Nationally celebrated since 1956, May is Bike Month has been celebrated in Eugene and Springfield since 2014, according to Lane County.

A series of Walk + Roll events will take place at various Springfield schools throughout the month of May.

Here’s a list of upcoming events for those interested in participating or volunteering.
