SPS students celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day
On a cold foggy Wednesday morning, students, parents, and school staff from Two Rivers Dos Rios Elementary, A3, and Hamlin Middle School gathered at Meadow Park in Springfield to recognize Ruby Bridges, a social justice icon.
Students arrived to find food, a free t-shirt, and friendly faces. Some of the students also cited the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day pledge before walking from the park to their school.
The event was organized by the Lane African American/Black Student Success Program through Lane Education Service District. Several volunteers also braved the chilly weather to help support the event, promote social justice and visit with parents and students.
Normally, Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is celebrated on November 14th, but the 14th is on a Sunday this year. The event was moved to November 17th.
