State requires face coverings indoors for fall 2021-22

Face coverings to be required as students and staff return in September

Late last month Governor Brown announced her direction to state authorities to require face coverings for all K-12 students, staff and visitors while indoors.

Following the July 22, Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority release of the statewide Resiliency Framework intended to guide K-12 schools and districts in their preparation for the 2021-22 school year, SPS shared a high-level outline of requirements.

With the update in the state’s requirements, SPS will be adjusting our 2021-22 framework to incorporate the new requirement.

Beginning, August 12, face coverings will be required to be worn by all staff, students and visitors while indoors at school sites.

SPS has remained committed to following the guidance and regulations provided by our state partners charged with leading the state through the health crisis. This will continue as we move into the 2021-22 school year.

Good afternoon, Springfield Public Schools!

We hope that you are well into a restful and healthy summer as life continues to slowly return to the familiar. We apologize for this interruption into your break, but are committed to sharing information and updates as they are finalized so that everyone has the most accurate information as they plan for the fall return to school. 

At the end of June, Governor Brown lifted the majority of the COVID-19 restrictions in Oregon. Additionally, the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority provided a framework for school this fall that provides greater flexibility to local districts to work directly with their local health department to develop health protocols that meet the needs of their community. 

Together with Lane County Public Health, school districts in Lane County have worked diligently to implement all mandated health and safety guidance. Here in Springfield, we are proud of the precautions and procedures that were implemented to maintain the health and safety of our school communities. 

Last Thursday, we received the most current recommendations from our state agencies that has allowed us to finalize high-level planning for the safe return of our students and staff this fall. 

Beginning in September the following health and safety protocols will be in place at SPS: 

  • Five days a week school schedules: students and staff will return to a normal school calendar with five days a week in-person instruction
  • Face coverings required for all students, staff and visitors* Updated August 9
    Face coverings recommended, not required: while face coverings remain an effective and strongly recommended measure to limit the spread of COVID-19, they will be welcomed and highly recommended in SPS schools, but no longer required for students or staff. (Exception: While riding the school bus)
  • Set up spaces for three feet physical distance: SPS will continue to arrange learning spaces to provide three feet of physical distance to the maximum extent possible while not limiting activities.
  • Continue to work closely with Lane County Public Health (LCPH): our schools and district facilities will continue to maintain contact logs in order to effectively work with LCPH in identifying COVID cases as well as those who are considered exposed to COVID-19, and potentially required to quarantine. 
  • Diligently follow other safety measures: SPS staff will continue to disinfect and clean high-touch surfaces, maintain the increased fresh air flow through the enhanced filtration and purification systems. 

Our district believes that these measures coupled with on-going, frequent hand washing breaks and a shared commitment to stay home when ill will help us all remain healthy and safe this coming year. 

While there are still details for this fall that are still in process as it is clear COVID-19 is not fully behind us, we are thankful to begin to shift our focus and energy squarely on the important task of preparing every student for a bright and successful future!

Esperamos que estén pasando un verano tranquilo y saludable mientras la vida regresa lentamente a la normalidad. Les pedimos disculpas por esta interrupción en su descanso, pero nos comprometemos a compartir la información y las actualizaciones a medida que se vayan finalizando para que todos tengan la información más precisa al planificar el regreso a la escuela en otoño.

A finales de junio, la gobernadora Brown levantó la mayoría de las restricciones del COVID-19 en Oregón. Además, el Departamento de Educación de Oregón y la Autoridad Sanitaria de Oregón proporcionaron un marco para la escuela este otoño que proporciona una mayor flexibilidad a los distritos locales para trabajar directamente con su departamento de salud local para desarrollar protocolos de salud que satisfagan las necesidades de su comunidad.

Junto con la Salud Pública del condado de Lane, los distritos escolares del condado de Lane han trabajado diligentemente para implementar todas las guías de salud y seguridad obligatorias. Aquí en Springfield, estamos orgullosos de las precauciones y procedimientos que se implementaron para mantener la salud y seguridad de nuestras comunidades escolares.

Hoy, recibimos las recomendaciones más actuales de nuestras agencias estatales que nos han permitido finalizar la planificación de alto nivel para el regreso seguro de nuestros estudiantes y personal este otoño.

A partir de septiembre se aplicarán los siguientes protocolos de salud y seguridad en SPS: 

  • Horarios escolares de cinco días a la semana: los estudiantes y el personal volverán a un calendario escolar normal con cinco días a la semana de enseñanza presencial.
  • Los cubrebocas son opcionales: aunque los cubrebocas siguen siendo una medida eficaz y muy recomendada para limitar la propagación del COVID-19, serán bienvenidos en las escuelas de SPS pero ya no serán obligatorios para los estudiantes o el personal. (Excepción: mientras se viaja en el autobús escolar)
  • Organizar los espacios para tres pies de distancia física: SPS continuará organizando los espacios de aprendizaje para proporcionar tres pies de distancia física en la mayor medida posible sin limitar las actividades.
  • Continuar trabajando de cerca con la Salud Pública del Condado de Lane (LCPH): nuestras escuelas e instalaciones del distrito continuarán manteniendo registros de contacto para trabajar efectivamente con LCPH en la identificación de casos de COVID, así como aquellos que se consideran expuestos a COVID-19, y potencialmente requeridos para la cuarentena.
  • Seguirá con diligencia otras medidas de seguridad: El personal del SPS continuará desinfectando y limpiando las superficies de alto contacto, manteniendo el aumento del flujo de aire fresco a través de los sistemas de filtración y purificación mejorados. 

Nuestro distrito cree que estas medidas, junto con los descansos frecuentes para lavarse las manos y el compromiso compartido de permanecer en casa cuando alguien esté enfermo, nos ayudarán a mantenernos sanos y seguros este año.

Aunque todavía hay detalles para este otoño que están en proceso, ya que está claro que COVID-19 no ha quedado totalmente atrás, estamos agradecidos de poder empezar a cambiar nuestro enfoque y energía directamente a la importante tarea de preparar a cada estudiante para un futuro brillante y exitoso.
