Important SPS Update: Start of school year delayed

Dear SPS Families, 

Today we reach out with some news about the start of the school year.

Springfield Public Schools will delay the start of the school year to September 21 for ALL students. In light of the ever-evolving Holiday Farm Fire affecting so many in our school community, focusing on people is our most important task right now.

The Holiday Farm Fire has already impacted large portions of our district staff, students and their families, indirectly affecting us all as we care for, worry for and work to support our family, friends and neighbors. 

In addition, the district is working to provide resources – including food and space to sleep – for many organizations working to provide aid, shelter, relief and safety to our community. We are supporting them as they fight fires to support us. 

We also know that families are still working to navigate COVID-19 and all of the complications associated with the virus, as well as a totally new approach to learning. Together we continue to navigate these challenges and take care of one another.  

Going forward 

As we move into the new school year, this is our tentative plan, as health and safety conditions allow.

Our K-3 students will continue to return to in-person instruction in a staggered start with K-1 beginning Sept. 21 in-person, joined by 2nd grade on Sept. 28, and 3rd on October 5, as health conditions allow.

Student Technology:

Technology distribution will be canceled for the remainder of the week and rescheduled for next week. 

  • Technology Delivery is canceled for the remainder of the week and will be held next week, Sept. 15 - 18, as follows:
    • High School (THS/SHS)
      • Tuesday – Friday 11 am – 6 pm
    • High School (A3)
      • Wednesday – Friday 9 am – 4 pm
    • High School (GHS)
      • Wednesday – Friday 2 pm – 5 pm
    • Elementary
      • Wednesday 9 – 11 am, and 3 – 7 pm
    • Middle School
      • Wednesday 11 am – 6 pm
    • NEW Springfield Students enrolled in SPSOnline
      • Wednesday, 2 – 5 pm, Brattain School, 425 10th Street

WiFi Distribution:

Students needing access to connectivity can check out devices Tuesday, Sept. 15 and Friday, Sept. 18 from 10 am – 6 pm.

  • WiFI Devices: will be available – at the Technology Department, 180 D Street (corner of Pioneer Parkway and E street)
    • Tuesday, Sept. 15, 10 am – 6 pm
    • Friday, Sept. 18, 10 am – 6 pm  

Meal Supports for Students:

  • Food services will be available at our elementary sites beginning, September 4  not impacted by wildfire response for all children 18 and under, from 11 – 1 pm.  

End of School Year and previously scheduled breaks do not change – Last day of school June 17

We know this added complication of a natural disaster in our community is an additional layer to an already complex year, and ultimately all of our decisions will be grounded in what is best for the members of our SPS community, as well as the greater Lane County area. We are hopeful that this additional week of space will allow us to all to pause and care for the people in our community.

Queridas familias de SPS, 

Hoy les comunicamos algunas noticias sobre el inicio de año escolar.

Las escuelas públicas de Springfield retrasarán el inicio del año hasta el 21 de septiembre para TODOS los estudiantes. A la luz de la constante evolución de Holiday Farm Fire que afecta a tantos en nuestra comunidad escolar, enfocarnos en las personas es nuestra tarea más importante en este momento.

El Holiday Farm Fire ya ha afectado a una gran parte del personal de nuestro distrito, los estudiantes y sus familias, afectándonos indirectamente a todos mientras cuidamos, nos preocupamos y trabajamos para apoyar a nuestra familia, amigos y vecinos. 

Además, el distrito está trabajando  para proporcionar recursos, incluidos alimentos y espacio para dormir, para muchas organizaciones que trabajan para brindar ayuda, refugio, alivio y seguridad a nuestra comunidad. Los apoyamos mientras luchan contra los incendios para apoyarnos.

También sabemos que las familias aún están trabajando para navegar por COVID-19 y todas las complicaciones asociadas con el virus, así como un enfoque de aprendizaje totalmente nuevo. Juntos continuamos navegando estos desafíos y cuidándonos unos a otros.  

Avanzando 

A medida que avanzamos hacia el nuevo año escolar, este es nuestro plan tentativo, según lo permitan las condiciones de salud y seguridad.

Nuestros estudiantes de K-3 continuarán regresando a la instrucción en persona en un comienzo escalonado con K-1 a partir del 21 de septiembre en persona, junto con el segundo grado el 28 de septiembre y el tercer grado el 5 de octubre, según lo permitan las condiciones de salud.

La distribución de tecnología se cancelará por el resto de la semana y se reprogramó para la próxima semana.

Distribución de WiFi:

Los estudiantes que necesiten acceso a la conectividad pueden retirar los dispositivos el martes 15 de septiembre y el viernes 18 de septiembre de 10 am a 6 pm

Sabemos que esta complicación adicional de un desastre natural en nuestra comunidad es una capa adicional a un año ya complejo y, en última instancia, todas nuestras decisiones se basarán en lo que es mejor para los miembros de nuestra comunidad de SPS, así como para el área de todo el condado de Lane. Tenemos la esperanza de que esta semana adicional de espacio nos permita a todos hacer una pausa y cuidad a las personas de nuestra comunidad.
