Giving Your Child a Jump Start
In addition to the basic tips offered in the Parent's Guide, here are some more resources for children who are ready for more.
You know how strongly we feel about this. Reading to your child every day is pretty much the single most important thing you can do to help your child succeed. There are all kinds of studies that show that reading is a "gateway skill," which means it gives kids a good foundation to learn all kinds of other things. The good news is that this doesn't require a lot of financial resources.
First, there's the library. It's free. (That's everybody's favorite word, right?) The Springfield Public Library also offers great free programs, including storytimes (both in English and bilingual).
Second, local resale stores have lots of great books available at very reasonable prices.
