Shawn Stover Chosen as SPS Interim Superintendent

The Springfield Public Schools Board of Directors has selected Dr. Shawn Stover to serve as interim superintendent for the 2026-27 school year, pending approval of his contract at the board's June 22 meeting. Dr. Stover will begin serving in the role on July 1.

Dr. Stover brings more than 30 years of educational leadership experience to Springfield. Most recently, he served as superintendent of Rockingham County Schools in North Carolina. His previous leadership roles include chief of secondary schools for the District of Columbia Public Schools, superintendent of Uplift Education Charter Schools in Texas, and principal and assistant principal in multiple school systems.

Throughout his career, Dr. Stover has led efforts to improve student achievement, expand college and career readiness opportunities, increase Advanced Placement participation and success, and strengthen workforce development programs. He has also secured major facility and infrastructure grants, expanded career pathway programs, increased industry-recognized credential attainment, and led nationally recognized schools and districts.

Dr. Stover holds a doctorate in leadership and organizational innovation from Marymount University, a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University, and superintendent certifications in North Carolina and Virginia.

“The board was unanimous in our enthusiastic support for Dr. Stover,” said Board Chair Jonathan Light. “He has a wealth of experience working in a variety of school districts across the United States, and we feel he is the perfect choice to lead Springfield Public Schools as our Interim Superintendent."

The appointment follows a nationwide search conducted with the assistance of Grundmeyer Leader Services. The search attracted 16 applicants, from which three finalists were selected for interviews. On June 9, finalists participated in a series of meetings and interviews with stakeholder groups representing staff, parents, students, community members, and District leadership.
