It is with deep sadness that Springfield Public Schools shares the news of the passing of EJ Rotherham, Assistant Principal at Agnes Stewart Middle School (ASMS). EJ passed away peacefully in his sleep over the Memorial Day weekend.
Support teams, including counselors, psychologists, substitute teachers, and therapy animals, were available at Agnes Stewart Middle School beginning Tuesday to help students and staff.
EJ Rotherham was more than an administrator – he was a mentor, a leader, and a beloved member of the Springfield community. As one of the founding staff members when Agnes Stewart Middle School opened its doors in 1998, EJ played a critical role in shaping the culture and spirit of ASMS.
Known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering commitment to students and staff of ASMS and Springfield, EJ touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his career. Whether through his engaging storytelling, his sharp wit, or his steady guidance, EJ made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
“EJ was the foundation and heart of Agnes Stewart Middle School,” said Principal Kevin Wright. “His energy and passion for people allowed him to connect with everyone, whether a student, staff, or family member. He brought his iconic energy, smile, and laugh to every task, big or small, and made everyone feel welcome.”
We extend our deepest condolences to EJ’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he enriched.
