The Hamlin Sports Complex is now one of a dozen official sites for a public SaveStation; a modern outdoor, alarmed, monitored, and interactive cabinet for an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The new unit was donated by PeaceHealth and part of the Eugene-Springfield HeartSafe Community initiative, which aims to expand access to potentially life-saving technology during heart-related emergencies. Aside from the actual cabinet, the donation also includes 24/7 monitoring, GPS service on the AED, and free pads for the next eight years, making the unit and services a total investment of $9,000.

SaveStations were also installed at other locations that serve youth and young adult sports, including the Willamalane Les Schwab Sports Complex, Lane Community College and the Babe Ruth Sport Complex.

“We had guidance from HeartSafe, but we felt like this was a really good location for the unit,” said SPS Health Services Coordinator, Tanya Martin. “Not only do we serve our middle school students, but we also frequently welcome high school students and athletes, coaches, and community members to our Hamlin Sports Complex.”

The new installations aim to improve survival rates for sudden cardiac arrests by allowing immediate intervention before EMS arrives, as survival chances drop 10% for every minute without a shock.

The Hamlin AED is stored in an outdoor cabinet near the baseball field; it sits unlocked and available for anyone to use. The station has clear instructions on what do in case of a cardiac emergency, and once opened, it sets off an alarm, takes pictures of who picks-up the unit, and begins tracking the unit’s location. The station also includes basic instructions on how to assist a person undergoing cardiac arrest and a small first-aid kit to help stop bleeds.

The actual AED unit at Hamlin can have its paddles swapped from adult size to youth size. In addition, because Hamlin’s AED is a modern interactive unit, at the press of a button a user can change the interactive instructions from English to Spanish.
