Elementary Students Honor Ruby Bridges

Elementary Students Honor Ruby Bridges
Brian Richardson

Springfield elementary students banded together to honor Ruby Bridges, the girl who became the first Black child to attend a formerly all-white public elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana. On November 14, all 12 elementary schools held an assembly to remember Ruby’s courageous walk

On November 14, 1960, 6-year-old Ruby showed extraordinary bravery as she walked into school surrounded by federal marshals and angry crowds, helping to open doors for generations of students to come. Her courage continues to inspire us today and reminds us of how far we’ve come as a nation and community, and of the importance of ensuring that every child feels safe, welcomed, and that they truly belong.

Following the assembly, students and staff took part in a short walk around the campus to symbolize our continued journey toward creating safe and welcoming spaces for all.

Leading up to this special day, students learned about Ruby Bridges during their library time. These lessons and stories help students understand Ruby’s personal story and the lasting impact of her actions on schools and communities across the country.
