Electronic Devices Ban in SPS Schools

Electronic Devices Ban in SPS Schools
Allison McGowan

This summer, Governor Tina Kotek issued an Executive Order requiring all Oregon K–12 public school districts to adopt policies banning student use of personal electronic devices during the school day. The order aims to improve instructional time, academic achievement, school climate, and healthy student interactions.

Beginning September 2025, all Springfield Public Schools (SPS) students must have their electronic devices off and away from bell to bell, including during passing periods and lunch.

Personal devices prohibited under the Executive Order include, but are not limited to:

  • Cell phones
  • Smart watches
  • Headphones/earbuds
  • Smart glasses
  • Tablets
  • Any device that connects to the internet

Students with an IEP or 504 plan: Parents/guardians should contact their student’s school for more information about exceptions.
