The Springfield Public Schools (SPS) Board of Directors has updated the Personal Electronic Devices Policy (JFCEB)to align with new state requirements outlined in Oregon Executive Order 25-09. The updated policy, adopted during the October 13 Board Meeting, brings SPS in line with statewide expectations designed to foster focused learning environments and support student well-being.

The new policy establishes consistent rules across SPS for the use of personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and connected earbuds, during school hours. Under the updated policy, students are not permitted to use personal electronic devices from the start of regular instructional hours until the end of regular instructional hours, unless an exception applies. Devices may still be brought to school but must be stored in a locker, backpack, or vehicle while at school.

“This policy supports a learning environment that minimizes distractions and encourages in-person engagement,” said Superintendent Todd Hamilton. “We appreciate the Board’s thoughtful discussion and the school community’s input as we work to ensure that classrooms remain spaces centered on connection, focus, and learning.”

SPS started the 2025-26 school year with an electronic device ban in place across all schools as the Board worked to craft and approve the updated policy. This minimized potential distraction and interruption for the learning environment as students did not have to make the adjustment mid-year to an updated policy.
