Meet Our People

Melissa Blomquist

Melissa Blomquist

Registrar at Briggs Middle School
25+ years working at SPS

"I was born and raised in Springfield and attended SPS schools. I am a Thurston High School graduate and a Cabaret alumna. I received my B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Oregon, in 1992. Both of my parents were SPS employees. My mother Judy Wood, recently retired after 38 years of service at Maple Elementary. I have been vested in our district for more than 25 years. I started out as a classroom volunteer, became a PTA member and held multiple positions on the board. My assignment with SPS began part-time at Ridgeview Elementary where I supported students and staff for five years. My journey continued into a full-time position at Briggs Middle School, where I have been the registrar for 12 years. I have been asked what keeps me at Briggs? My work family is the best! We are a team, we work together, support one another and show up for each other daily. I feel fortunate to call Briggs my home away from home."

"I developed a heart for the youth at a young age. I started working and volunteering with elementary Sunday school when I was in 7th grade. My career at TRDR started in March 2023. Over the years I've enjoyed building friendships, most of all with the children. Seeing them grow in an emotional, social, and educational way gives me so much hope for them, even if they’re struggling. Probably the most challenging part in my job is learning how to deal with diverse behavior, and yet it feels like it's the most rewarding part as well. It gives me a whole different light and level of empathy to know why kids react the way they do. My advice for those who are starting an education career is to develop a servant heart towards the kids regardless of circumstances, even when they bring big emotions or even when they don’t. Having kids feel seen, loved, heard, and cared for is something that they are going carry into their teen and adult years. "

Dave Delamarter

Substitute Teacher at Walterville Elementary
58+ years working at SPS

"My father was a minister and we moved around. I attended elementary school in Spokane, WA. However, I consider Springfield my hometown. I graduated from Springfield High School in 1959. I went to college and played basketball, and met my wife during my freshman year in college. I started my teaching career at Briggs in 1967. I stopped teaching in June 1997 and started working as a substitute teacher right away. I have been an SPS sub for 28 years. At an early age I enjoyed working with kids. When I graduated from high school it was pretty firm in my mind that I was going to work with children or in some form of communication with people. For me, academics are secondary, the most important thing is to build relationships with staff, students, and parents. The one thing I enjoy the most about teaching is building relationships, building memories. I always hope that the work we do helps kids build character."

District Locksmith
9 years working at SPS

"I was born in Bend, OR, but I grew up as an SPS student. I attended Thurston elementary, middle and high! I am very lucky to work alongside my sister (who is a welder and fabricator), and my mom (who is a central office department assistant). To make a long story shorter, I worked two jobs for seven years; during the day, I was Miss T., the EA at ASMS and in the evenings, I was Madi the barista. As a barista I made connections with lots of people. I met the owner of Eugene-Springfield Lock and Safe. His job and business had always fascinated me. One thing led to another and after a lot of learning and training, a State of Oregon Locksmith Certification, and a panel interview later, I was hired. It was a huge blessing with how perfectly everything fell into place. My favorite funny situation is an always occuring one, it's just people's reaction to finding out that I'm the locksmith! I get some side eye, and doubtful looks, but mostly it's a lot of excitement and support."
