Meet Our People

Page Kinder Teacher Ivy McClain

Ivy McClain

Kinder Teacher at Page Elementary
9 years working at SPS

"I started my teaching career as a sub, and started at Page nine years ago. I have taught Kindergarten since! I am very lucky to have been a Page Panther for my entire time in Springfield. My favorite thing about Page is my collaborative team, our House system, and other fun school traditions. Kindergarten has been a learning experience that is equal parts chaos and fun. I started teaching one year after the full day Kindergarten switch, so those earlier years of figuring out how to build stamina with young students was tricky. I thrive on routines and consistency, and I have seen how much it benefits our youngest students too. My advice for new teachers is to start small, give yourself patience and grace, and find things within your teaching that bring you joy. We can't ask ourselves to learn and "do it all" when we start out. Picking out one goal or area to better my skill-set in each year has been helpful. Kindergarten is a foundational year, and I am honored to create lasting memories, skills and habits for our youngest Panthers!"

Chris Smith

Chris Smith

Foreman and Supervisor
One year working at SPS

"My career in construction started when I was 9 years of age. I would work weekends with my step father while he did side jobs to make ends meet. My wife and I moved to Eugene back in 1998, which is when we started our business in the construction and home inspection industry. One of the things I enjoy about being a foreman for SPS is that projects change from day to day. Here at the Maintenance Center we work with individuals who are looking to extend their careers and grow within the district. My greatest joy would have to be when we hire a new employee and set them onto their future career path.  As a supervisor of 58 full-time custodial staff, five part-time custodians, four carpenters, two painters and one mechanic, trying to facilitate and manage them can get complicated. At the end of the day, if tasks are completed, staff are healthy, schools are clean and no accidents have occurred, I consider that a win!"

Keith Manring

Keith Manring

Assistant Principal at Mt. Vernon Elementary
4+ years working at SPS

"After serving as a Marine officer, my wife and I spent four years teaching in Morocco. It was an incredible experience, but when we came back to the U.S. I decided to put my journalism degree to work. I started what would be a 15-year career in daily newspapers at the Gazette-Times in Corvallis, eventually working at papers in California and Indianapolis. Then three events unfolded to pull me back to education: students I had taught more than a decade before began reaching out to thank me for making an impact on their lives; the world of print journalism began to implode and the Institute for Citizens and Scholars began recruiting people to switch careers and become teachers. I love walking through our halls and not only greeting staff and students, but knowing a little bit of their backstory. Seeing how much our students grow has been a new experience for me--that insight gives me a sense of optimism and hope about our work, as well as patience."

Wendy Zacharias

Counselor at Academy of Arts and Academics
18+ years working at SPS

"I grew-up in Eugene and graduated high school and college from schools in Eugene. I started my education career at Sheldon High School, then transferred to Creswell High School and was the counselor there for eight years and then for the last 18 years, I have been at A3. I know it sounds cliché, but I enjoy working with our Principal Ame Beard—she is an amazing administrator. I love to witness the Student Led Conferences, Mid and End of the Year Reviews, it is a wonderful way to see growth in individuals. Our Confluence and Artabration events are an extraordinary time to see our students shine. Parents are required to attend reviews, which is a great way to celebrate and connect with their child. Every year, I get really excited to work with seniors on college applications, scholarships and grants to help pay for college. It is an honor to be a part of the A3 community."
