Meet Our People

Kenny Rasmussen
IT and Synergy Support
5 years working at SPS
"I am the youngest of three, with one brother in Bend and one sister living in Kenya. My father passed away in 2013 and my mom now lives in Portland. My parents were missionaries so I spent most of my formative years in Ethiopia and Kenya. I began my tech support career when my mother started a home office and needed help learning new software, setting-up her computer, and troubleshooting printers. After I graduated OSU with my speech communication degree, I worked at Garmin for six years. I started looking back into tech support and SPS was looking for a new Synergy admin. I began work on Feb 1, 2021 – fully remote for the first few months before moving from Albany to Springfield. One of the first projects that my co-worker Bailey and I worked on when I arrived was the transition from paper enrollment to digital OnLine Registration. I have two elementary kids and one in middle school now; watching them as students has absolutely helped me in my job. I have a ParentVUE account with active students that I can look at, find glitches, and experience any software frustrations. No test account has the same feeling as a live user and I get to struggle with the frustrations along with everyone else. Sometimes there is something I can do about it, other times it simply helps me be empathetic to parents when it’s an issue we can’t change."

Deb Jolda
Administrative Secretary at Centennial Elementary

"I have two much older brothers, so I was basically an only child. I’m told I was quite a handful as a child – a bit headstrong, but painfully shy. I moved to Oregon when I was 30 for a change of scenery. I love it out here! I’ve done a lot of different things, including managing an engineering firm and work as a writer and editor for a magazine and a newspaper. Loved all of those jobs. I was excited to take the job in communications at SPS where I would be able to work a six-hour day, which corresponded with my kiddo’s school day. I used to call myself the “Good News Fairy,” and put out a newsletter, district communications, op-eds, helped revamp the website, etc. After 14 years, I realized I wanted to work more directly with students, and I’ve been at Centennial since. I don’t get to write as much as I would like these days, but I absolutely love this job! No two days are alike. I really want families to feel like they are partners in their kids’ education. My favorite mantras are “Be curious,” “Be kind,” “Treat other people the way you would like to be treated,” and “You can do anything you set your mind to.” Children these days have a lot of influences outside of school that we can’t control, and their home lives can be turbulent. We want kids and families to feel welcome and supported, and we want families to be part of their kids’ education."

Tiffany Busse
Sixth Grade Language Arts Teacher at ASMS
10+ years working at SPS
"I was born in Salem Oregon, but I only remember living in Springfield. I went to Moffitt Elementary, Hamlin Middle, and Springfield High (Go Millers!). I had amazing teachers in this district that inspired me to become an educator. I knew I wanted to teach from a very young age. I went to Pacific University for my Masters. There I was placed at Agnes Stewart Middle School (ASMS) for my student teaching experience. I had an amazing mentor teacher, Sue Dickman. The following school year I got a teaching job at ASMS. Middle school is such an awkward, yet fun time of life. They still find little things funny, but they can also have really deep conversations if they feel comfortable doing so. I honestly think being a mom has made me a more compassionate and understanding teacher. My kids are still really young, but I catch myself imagining what type of teacher I would want my own kids to have in middle school, and wonder if I’m that teacher. When Mr. Rotherham was here, he would always remind us that we are working with 11–14-year-old kids. Not adults, but kids. Middle school kids still like to be read to. I think parents should still read to their kids when they are 11 or 12 years old, or listen to their child read aloud at home. This is a great way to spend more time with our kids at home and instill that value in reading."

Bradley Barnhart
Lead Custodian at Gateways High School
19 years working at SPS
"While I was born in Southern CA., my family moved to Springfield in 1982. I'm the youngest of 4 siblings. At one time, two of my siblings were married to a Mr. Bacon or a Mr. Crisp. I attended Ridgeview Elementary as a student near the end of the first year the school opened and went on through SPS district schools to graduate from Thurston High School. Over the years, I've worked for three newspapers in OR and the Midwest. Before getting involved in the cleaning industry, I co-owned a bookstore and worked a short time as a saltine "cracker packer" in a bakery in Iowa. I returned to Oregon and started working as a school custodian in 4J and SPS. I've served as the lead custodian in a couple elementaries and was asked to assist Gateways HS as their new lead custodian when the school moved into the remodeled Brattain Elementary building. Working in a school is the best! I'm able to contribute not only to maintaining a clean and healthy learning environment, but also be a positive role model to young people. Making connections with students with a smile is important and helps build a sense of belonging and ownership in their school building. A favorite hobby is genealogy. Most of my extended Barnhart relatives live in Lane County, with some working for the SPS school district (past and present)."
