Electronic Devices Ban
In the summer of 2025, Governor Tina Kotek issued an Executive Order requiring all Oregon K–12 public school districts to adopt policies banning student use of personal electronic devices during the school day.
The ban is intended to boost the quality of instructional time and academic achievement, improving behaviors, boosting school climate, and re-establishing healthy student interactions. Starting in September 2025, all Springfield Public Schools students must have their phone turned off and put away from bell to bell, including during passing periods and lunch.
Personal devices banned in the executive order include, but are not limited to:
- Cell phones
- Smart watches
- Headphones/earbuds
- Smart glasses
- Tablets
- Any device that connects to the internet
For students with an individual education plan or 504 plan, parents/guardians should contact their student’s school for more information about exceptions related to their student’s IEP or 504 plan.
Students will continue to have access to their district-issued computer for school-based instruction.
As part of Kotek’s order, Districts must evaluate and update their current electronic devices policy by October 31 with full implementation by January 1, 2026. The Springfield Board of Directors updated the District's policy on October 13, 2025.
