Springfield Public Schools is excited to begin to return our high school students to athletic competitions.
Following the health and safety recommendations of our state and local partners Springfield Schools will be adhering to strict safety protocols listed below.
SPS COVID-19 Guidelines & Protocols: Extreme Risk Category

Policy
SHS/THS Practice
Attendance:
- Visitors and spectators are not allowed to attend athletic practices. Attendees are to be limited to coaches and student-athletes.
- Spectators may not be allowed at contests, depending on the county risk level.
- Maximum of 50 people are allowed
- Parent meeting/communication notifying them of the “closed” practice policy.
- Schools may broadcast games in order to allow spectators the opportunity to watch.
Health Screening Protocols:
- Clear and accurate attendance is to be recorded of all coaches, staff and students on a daily basis. This should be readily available for contact tracing.
- All coaches and students are required to be screened daily for signs/symptoms of COVID-19 prior to participating.
- All coaches and students are required to have temperatures taken with a no-touch thermometer upon arrival.
- Any person with positive symptoms or a temperature equal to 100.3 degrees or above should not be allowed to participate, should self-isolate, and contact their health-care provider.
- Upon entering practice, students and coaches will answer the 5 OHA protocol questions and have their temperature taken.
- Do you or have you had a cough within the past 14 days?
- Do you or have you experienced shortness of breath within the past 14 days?
- Have you experienced nausea/vomiting/diarrhea with this past 14 days?
- Do you have a family member or person living in your household with any of these symptoms within the past 14 days?
- Have you had any contact with a COVID-19 positive case?
- Athletes will be sent home to quarantine if answering yes to any questions or temperature is above 100.3 degrees.
Safety Officer:
- Each school is required to designate a safety officer who is responsible for monitoring compliance of District/School guidelines (physical distancing, face masks, sanitization, etc.).
- Each team is responsible for identifying a “Safety Coach”, an individual that will monitor social distancing requirements, sanitization processes, and face covering protocols before, during and after practices.
- The school’s Athletic Trainer will be designated as the High School Safety Officer.
- Head coaches will designate a “Safety Coach” who will be responsible for monitoring social distancing requirements, sanitization processes, and face covering protocols before, during and after practices.
Access to Facilities:
- Locker rooms should not be utilized.
- Participants should report in appropriate attire and immediately return home to shower after participation. Encourage students to launder workout clothing upon returning home.
- No participants are allowed in athletic training facilities (training room).
- Facility access guidelines will be made clear to coaches, athletes and families prior to any organized team activities.
- Athletic Trainer will set up a remote, outdoor treatment area.
Entrance Requirements:
- Each school is required to establish an entrance routine and route specific to each sport.
- Coaches and Athletic Director will assign entrance points specific to each sport/team.
Exit Requirements:
- Each school is required to establish an exit routine and route specific to each sport.
- Coaches and Athletic Director will assign exit points specific to each sport/team.
- These expectations will be communicated to parents and students prior to any organized team activities.
Limitations on Gatherings:
- Gatherings will follow the OHA Sector Risk Level Guidance Chart.
- There must be a minimum of 6 feet between each individual at all times. If this is not possible indoors, then the maximum number of individuals in the room must be decreased in order to comply.
- Athletic Director and Administrator will educate coaches on maximum capacities of gyms, fields, and facilities.
Face Coverings:
- Cloth face coverings are considered acceptable.
- Face coverings are required of all attendees when on campus.
- Coaches and Student-Athletes are required to wear face coverings at all times.
- Training will be provided to coaches regarding:
- Face Coverings - Use of face coverings by coaches and students.
Hygiene Practices:
- Hand washing should be advised and encouraged frequently for a minimum of 20 seconds. If hand washing is not available, hand sanitizer should be readily available (minimum 60% - 90% Alcohol base).
- Coughing or sneezing should be into a tissue, or inside the elbow. Avoid touching your face and disinfect hands often.
- Hand sanitizer stations should be placed in numerous locations in the practice venue and readily accessible.
- Physical contact should be avoided at all times, including high- fives, fist bumps, hugs and group celebrations.
- Training will be provided to coaches and students regarding:

Weight Rooms:
- Use of weight rooms should be pre-scheduled and adhere to strict safety guidelines in accordance with the OHA Sector Risk Level Guidance Chart.
- Weight rooms should follow social distancing requirements in a safe manner. Face coverings should be worn at all times.
- Assistance with weight lifting (spotting) should be done in a safe manner on the sides of equipment, not directly over or behind the participant.
- Weight equipment should be wiped down thoroughly before and after each individual’s use of equipment.
- Training will be provided to coaches and students regarding:

- Weight room use must follow the OHA Sector Risk Level Guidance Chart.
- Follow social distancing requirements in a safe manner.
- Face coverings should be worn at all times.
- Spotting lifters should be done in a safe manner on the sides of equipment, not directly over or behind the participant.
- Weight equipment should be wiped down thoroughly before and after each individual’s use of equipment.
Athletic Clothing:
- Students should wear their own appropriate workout clothing (do not share clothing or towels). Individual clothing/towels should be taken home, and washed after every workout.
- Training will be provided to coaches and students regarding:

Hydration:
- Students should bring their own water bottles to use while they are at practice. Water bottles should not be shared.
- Hydration stations should not be utilized, except those designed to refill bottles in a contact-free manner.

Sanitization:
- Doors leading into restrooms should be propped open (unless privacy is compromised) to avoid touching door handles.
- Adequate cleaning schedules should be created and implemented for all athletic facilities. Prior to entering a facility, hard surfaces and high touch areas should be sanitized.
- Upon conclusion of practice, all equipment is required to be sanitized before being stored.
- Doors to restrooms will be propped open where applicable.
- Thurston and Springfield High School will work with custodial services to develop an adequate cleaning schedule.
- The head coaches will insure that all equipment is sanitized at the conclusion of practice.
Restrooms:
- No participant is allowed to change clothes in the restrooms.
- All participants should come to the facility dressed and ready to participate.
- Training will be provided to coaches and students regarding:

- Cleaning schedules are to be established and coordinated with district custodial services.
- Frequent cleaning and disinfecting is required for all high- traffic areas and commonly touched surfaces.
